Art and Technology Blog Post 1

To start off this blog post I suppose that I should tell you a little about me. My name is Keri and I grew up in the west suburbs of Chicago, but I've been traveling along the East Coast since the fourth grade. I'm a sophomore and I'll be turning 20 in February. My major is Digital Arts, but I am mainly interested in animation. I don't really do much actually, I take care of my dog, workout, and go to class, that's it. I really like the Winter Olympics and just winter sports in general. I don't really have a lot of hobbies I guess.

I first got into art when I was little and I would draw a lot and eventually got to use clay in my art classes in elementary school but I went through a phase of doubt if it was really worth it and spent most of high school without really knowing what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and that entire time for about 4 years, since I really didn't make an effort to draw from middle school till my junior year of high school, I probably doodled more than any other time in my life and when I realized that I was still drawing after all that time I decided to just go for it and major in art. I chose digital art because I prefer to do things on the computer and by chance after taking beginning 3D animation I found that I really enjoyed modeling and animation in maya, but in order to compete more efficiently for a job after I graduate I decided to minor in Graphic Design too.

I'm mainly taking this class because it's required, but I'm also planning on minoring in Graphic Design and after looking at the syllabus I think this class will teach me a lot about that industry and learning how to use blogger more efficiently for the future when I will most certainly have to use it. The performance video does make me a bit nervous because I don't like to be recorded but I figure this is just another hurdle to get through and once it's over I won't have to think about it again.

For the performance art project I was inspired originally inspired by Tatsumi Hijikata for the creepiness of his animation, but I soon discovered Benjamin Bennet, who had also managed to create an air of creepy by sitting motionless for hours. I wanted my performance to be a contradiction, in that I am lit up to symbolize the light of life, but remain motionless to create this kind of unnatural feeling to see if that contradiction would unsettle people. That response of being unsettled was what I mainly got from people, especially kids. I was mistaken as a statue until people walked past and I could see them kinda jump and stare at me as they walked past, most people were afraid to get close to me which I found interesting because I was essentially just sitting still, nothing that people would say they get creeped out by, but upon being faced with it they would keep about 10 feet away. Final Video

For the final video I decided to edit clips of mass shootings together and add audio from debates and interviews on top that slowly overlap to the point that you can't understand anything that's being said. I wanted to do this because I feel like society and news network politicize shootings to the point that the conversation gets lost and nothing will get done. The video reflects how I see every debate about gun reform go where they stop talking about the lives lost and instead focus just on the guns and what they would do with their guns and just forget that it isn't about them, it's about the lives being lost because the U.S. Government can't make a decision on how to solve the issue at hand. It becomes more of a debate about whether there is a gun issue or not. Which obviously there is an issue with guns in America. That's what the video clips I used show. 1. Studio Killers - Virtual I consider the Studio Killers to fit into the virtual movement because they are not only a virtual band, but also refuse to identify themselves in real life, which solidifies themselves as a virtual band. Their music is also very nontraditional, as they are made up of one singer and two DJ's and their music is only mad up from vocals and synthesizers. 2. Robert Delong - House I consider House to best fit Robert Delong because of his use of manipulating his own voice with various instruments he builds himself and the style of his music is easy to dance to and be able to enjoy in a club. 3. Alle Farben - Electronic Producer/DJ Culture I chose Alle Farben for DJ Culture because of the presentation of his music in concert and his use of technology as his instrument. He also rarely ever lacks any vocal element in his songs, which I think makes him more similar to the DJ culture and to what DJ Khaled is doing, than to EDM. 4. Poppy - Techno
